Document the vehicle thoroughly and immediately
- Photos of every panel, the interior, the odometer and the VIN plate
- Pre-trip photos from the listing or previous trips for comparison
- Independent repair estimates, not just the first one offered
- Records showing your normal booking rate and calendar, for loss-of-use
- Maintenance records showing the vehicle was in sound condition
Diminished value and loss of use
A repaired vehicle with an accident on its history is worth less than one without. Diminished value and lost booking income are real categories of loss, but they must be documented and argued — they are rarely offered.
Liability exposure
If a guest injured someone during a trip, the injured party may look at every possibly applicable policy, including yours. Coverage typically depends on the protection plan in place, your policy language around commercial or rental use, and state law. Do not assume your personal policy responds — and do not assume it does not.
If your personal insurer denies the claim
Many personal auto policies contain a livery or commercial-use exclusion. A denial letter is not always the end of the analysis: the exact wording, the state, and the facts of the trip all matter.
When someone was injured
Injury claims are different from vehicle claims in scale, timeline and consequence. If a guest, passenger, or third party was hurt in your vehicle during a trip, get the situation reviewed rather than negotiating it yourself.
Talk it through
